About Chiang Mai Chiang Mai, popular known as The Rose of the north, was founded by King Mengrai the great in 1296. It is about 700 kilometers north to Bangkok, situated on the Mae Ping River basin some 310 meters above sea level. The city is large, approximately 20,170 square kilometers, surrounded by high mountain ranges which made it coller and drier than other Thai cities. The flight time is approximately 1 hour. By rail: The state Railway of Thailand operates daily service from Bangkok Railway Station (Hua Lamphong). Fares must be bargained in advance. Minimum fare is approximately 20 baht. The other common transport is ‘See Lor’ or ‘Song Theo’ (Four wheel red car, like pick-up truck with a roof over the back).
